Help your child develop accurate counting skills using simple objects you already have around the home.

In this activity, children practice carefully touching or moving each object as they say the numbers aloud. This develops one-to-one correspondence—the understanding that each object must be counted once and matched with one number word.

One-to-one correspondence is a fundamental early numeracy skill taught in Kindergarten. Developing this understanding helps children count more accurately and builds a strong foundation for working with larger quantities and solving more complex mathematical problems.

The included demonstration video shows you how to introduce and practise careful counting confidently with your child at home.

Make it easier

Begin with a small handful of objects and arrange them in a straight line. Encourage your child to slowly touch or move each object as they count aloud.

Make it harder

Increase the number of objects and arrange them in a scattered group or cluster. Encourage your child to choose a strategy for keeping track of which objects have already been counted.
