Help your child learn to listen to individual sounds and blend them together to make a complete word.

Oral blending is an essential early reading skill. Before children can independently sound out written words, they need to hear separate sounds and confidently combine them. Regular, playful practice helps develop the phonemic awareness skills that form the foundation of successful reading.

The resource progresses from simple two-sound words to three-sound words, allowing your child to build confidence gradually. A step-by-step demonstration video shows you how to practise oral blending correctly at home.

Make it easier

Begin with familiar two-sound words. Say each sound slowly and clearly, allowing a small pause between them. Repeat the sounds if needed and blend the word together with your child.

Make it harder

Progress to three-sound words. Gradually reduce the pause between each sound and encourage your child to blend the complete word independently.

Once your child is confident, try the activity verbally without using the cards.
