Help your child learn to hear and separate the individual sounds within spoken words.
Oral segmenting is an essential early literacy skill. Before children can confidently spell and write words, they need to recognise each sound they can hear. Practising this skill helps children understand how words are constructed and prepares them to connect sounds with letters when reading and writing at school.
The activity progresses from simple two-sound words to three-sound words, while the included demonstration video shows you how to practise segmenting confidently at home.
Make it easier
Begin with familiar two-sound words. Say the complete word first and then help your child stretch it out, listening carefully for each individual sound.
You can say and separate the sounds together until your child becomes more confident.
Make it harder
Progress to words containing three individual sounds. Encourage your child to say the word, identify each sound independently and count how many sounds they can hear.
Once your child begins recognising written letter sounds, they can progress to the extension activity.
