Help your child explore how words can be separated into two sound parts: the beginning sound, known as the onset, and the remaining part of the word, known as the rime.
Learning to hear these parts helps children notice similarities between words and understand how changing one sound can create a new word. This is an important phonological awareness skill that supports future reading, word decoding and spelling.
The colour-coded visual resources make this concept easier for young children to understand, while the demonstration video shows you exactly how to introduce the activity at home.
Make it easier
Use the colourful picture cards and point to the colour-coded sections as you say each part of the word slowly. Encourage your child to repeat the two parts before blending them back together.
Make it harder
Remove the visual cards and practise the activity verbally. Encourage your child to separate familiar words into their beginning sound and remaining word part independently.
