Help your child understand how numbers are connected by exploring which number is one more than a given number.
Children begin with a chosen numeral before moving forward by one number and identifying what comes next. This helps them understand that “one more” means adding one, rather than simply memorising the order in which numbers are said.
Developing this number sense is an important Kindergarten skill that supports counting, addition, subtraction and mental computation. Through repeated practice, children begin to recognise patterns and work with number sequences more confidently.
The included demonstration video shows the activity in action and provides practical guidance for introducing “one more” to your child at home.
Make it easier
Begin with numbers 1–5 and ask only, “What is one more?”
Use the included number line as a visual guide. Help your child locate the starting number and move forward by one space to find the answer.
You can also use counters to demonstrate the concept by making a small group and adding one more object.
Make it harder
Gradually increase the number range to 10 and then 20. Encourage your child to answer without using the number line before checking their response visually.
Once they confidently understand “one more,” introduce “one less” and practice moving backwards by one space.
