Roll It, Flip It & Peg It!

Help your child strengthen number recognition, number-line understanding and fine motor skills with this hands-on numeracy activity.

Children roll a die or flip a numeral card before finding the corresponding position on the number line and marking it with a peg or another suitable object.

As they play, children develop an understanding that numbers follow a sequence and that every numeral has its own position and value. Using pegs also strengthens the hands and fingers needed for pencil control, cutting and completing everyday classroom tasks.

The included demonstration video shows you how to prepare the resources, introduce the activity and adapt it as your child’s confidence develops.

Make it easier

Begin with numbers 1–10. Help your child identify the numeral and locate the matching position on the number line.

Instead of using a peg, your child can point to the number or place a larger object on top of it.

Make it harder

Progress to the 1–20 number line and encourage your child to locate each numeral independently.

For an additional challenge, ask your child to practice writing the selected numeral using the number-writing section of the printable resource.
